DELOITTE AND SAILORS’ SOCIETY CYCLE ANNOUNCEMENT

CHARITY CYCLE RIDE WAITING FOR BRIGHTER WEATHER

1 October 2008

The Sailors’ Society would like to announce that the Deloitte and Sailors’ Society Cycle, scheduled to take place on Sunday 5th October 2008 has been postponed until Sunday 10th May 2009.

The decision has been made in light of the potentially unsafe weather forecast for October.  The event organisers have also received feedback, which suggests that Southampton wants a big charity event in the city in the Spring.

Event sponsors Deloitte, Blake Lapthorn and ABP Southampton are all fully supportive of the changed date and have pledged their continued support to the event next year.

The charity event on Sunday 10th May promises to be even bigger and better, with participants attending from across the Southampton community.

The organisers apologise for the inconvenience but sincerely hope that everyone will be able to continue their involvement with the event and that people keep registering for a cycling place online or by post.  The Society will keep cyclists posted with all details of the event as well as training and fundraising tips.  In fact there is now even more time to prepare.

With four different cycle routes of varying lengths and difficulty and a great selection of entertainment and local food at Mayflower Park, the Deloitte and Sailors’ Society Cycle provides an excellent day out for all the family, friends or office colleagues.

The event is aimed at raising money for Southampton-run international charity, the Sailors’ Society.

The Sailors’ Society exists to enrich and enhance seafarers’ lives around the world.  Seafarers lead an incredibly lonely existence, often spending nine or more months at sea away from their homes and loved ones.  Through a network of Port Chaplains and Seafarers’ Centres across the UK and around the world, the Sailors’ Society aims to replace their isolation with belonging.

The organisers wish to extend a big thank you to all who have so enthusiastically pledged their support of the Deloitte and Sailors’ Society Cycle.  We look forward to seeing you on your bikes in May 2009 for a fantastic event.

EXTREMEBOAT COMPLETE HOME DOUBLE IN COWES!

Sunday 26 August 2007 - Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK: Another superb tactical performance from Jackie Hunt and Mike Shelton in Extremeboat, secured an emphatic victory and with it the British Grand Prix SuperSport title for the husband and wife pairing. It was the second consecutive year that Hunt and Shelton have won their home event and they now move on to the season’s penultimate Grand Prix as championship leaders.

In a fiercely fought production class encounter, Sun Lik Beer, the Anglo-Chinese boat of Martin Lai and Andreas Halkiopoulos moved through the field, overtaking VoomVoom.com on lap 4 to take second place and put pressure on Extremeboat. Behind them the Championship leaders, Roscioli Hotels Roma, were building up a head of steam, making up for a disappointing result in Friday’s first leg and eager to secure valuable championship points.  Lai and Halkiopoulos are determined, exceptional racers and had to utilise all of their racing skills to stay ahead of the Italians to take runners-up place in the Grand Prix.  Buzzi Bullet also performed well throughout the weekend, just missing out on third place over the two legs from VoomVoom.com.

VoomVoom.com, piloted by Vee Ganjavian and Charles Williams-Hawkes, had undertaken major development work in the build up to this event, including two new engines. The hard work has started to pay dividends as they followed up an impressive performance on Friday to claim a Grand Prix podium place. The team once again led in the early stages and now look set to play a significant part as the championship moves to Zeebrugge, Belgium, over the weekend of the 8/9 September. With the top three teams, Extremeboat, Roscioli Hotels and Buzzi Bullet separated by just 60 points, it is still all to play for!

A WIN DOUBLE GIVES LUCAS OILS-OUTERLIMITS THE P1 BRITISH GP!

Lucas Oil-Outerlimits, driven by Joe Sgro and Mike Fiore, secured its maiden Grand Prix victory in the British Grand Prix of the Sea, winning today’s second leg  to complete a weekend double. Under intense pressure from King of Shaves, piloted by Craig Wilson and James Shepperd, they twice re-took the lead from their arch rivals with the gap rarely more than five seconds throughout the 54 nautical mile race. It was the finest possible example of powerboat racing - competitive, dramatic aerial action and overtaking throughout.

Tight circuit racing may not favour all the P1 muscle machines, and in particular those with diesel engines, but it certainly suited the two American craft whose neck and neck racing was captivating for the huge audience packed along the Cowes Esplanade and on the hundreds of craft lining The Solent. Britain’s James Shepperd, driver for King of Shaves, the Ilmor-powered Fountain, is renowned for his brilliant turning but nothing he could do in the closing stages would reel in the all-American leaders.

Behind these two, another titanic battle was being fought out for third place between Wettpunkt.com and OSG, with OSG finally winning it at the last buoy to take third on the day and in the two-legged Grand Prix.  Behind them, both the German Searex and Italian Kiton team secured valuable championship points and Kiton rounded off a strong weekends racing with fourth place overall.

Fainplast decided not to race today, in protest against recent decisions that they feel have unfairly undermined their cause.

The Championship now moves to Zeebrugge, Belgium, for the penultimate Grand Prix over the weekend of  8/9 September.

Outerlimits Secure First US Win at Cowes!

The Mercury-powered Lucas Oil Outerlimits boat of Joe Sgro and Nigel Hook took the chequered flag in today’s first leg of the P1 British Grand Prix, the historic Round the Island race, followed just a half boat-length away by its arch rivals King of Shaves, with Italian’s OSG in third. The result was a much-needed boost for the team whose season has been a mixture of great racing and misfortune.

With calm waters making for high speed racing around the Island, these high-speed racing craft were able to drive flat-out which, as they neared the chequered flag, put many above the average top-speed limit, implemented for safety reasons. As a result, the racing spectacle became somewhat confusing as the lead boats slowed before the chequered flag to avoid time penalties. It was probably inevitable after the fast and furious early pace.

The unusual ending just added to the drama of a race that had been intensely competitive throughout. The early series of circuit laps, before the boats embarked upon the circumnavigation of the island, had seen King of Shaves take the lead from the off with most of the field in close contention. Wettpunkt.com were forced out early with a blown turbine leaving Outerlimits, OSG and Fainplast to contest the lead, and they did in thrilling fashion. At St Katherine’s, the halfway point, three boats, the British King of Shaves, American Outerlimits and Italian OSG passed almost in a dead heat - a stunning sight by the World’s fastest mono-hulls and further proof of the competitiveness of the Evolution class.

Italians Fainplast were first to take the chequered flag but a time penalty, imposed for exceeding the top average speed limit demoted them to fourth. King of Shaves Fountain Worldwide still lead the Evolution class by 90 points.

30th July 2007 - Southampton Container Terminals LTD (SCT) Expands its Footprint with a Further 10.5 Acres of Land

Southampton Container Terminals Ltd (SCT) continues to expand the size of the
terminal boundary by taking on a further 10.5 acres (approx) of leased land from
Associated British Ports.

The new land, currently being used for ‘roll on/roll’ off operations, will be handed over
in early September - more than a year ahead of the previously estimated handover
date.

Campbell Mason, Managing Director, SCT, said:

“This new land, which is in addition to the 13 acres taken on at the start of the year,
will take the terminal footprint to over 213 acres. We are delighted that ABP has
been able to accelerate the availability of this additional land as it will provide us with
further capacity to handle the continued high volume of boxes moving through the
terminal.”

Approximately 3 of the 10.5 acres will require some repaving works as well as the
removal of some existing structures. Allowing for these works, the land will be
phased into terminal operations as soon as practicable following handover.

Southampton annual festival launches with a splash

Around 90 of the regions top businessmen and women celebrated the launch, and start, of Southampton’s sea-related festival with a champagne breakfast at Banana Wharf in Ocean Village.

Sea City 2007 celebrates the City’s unique maritime heritage by organising and promoting fun and thrilling sea-related events, activities and attractions aimed at residents of and visitors to Southampton. There are already dozens of events lined up such as the Southampton Boat Show, the Sea City Seafood Festival, ‘Do the Docks’ tours, famous cruise liner arrivals and an exciting range of riverboat shuffles.

Sally Lynskey, Chief Executive of Business Southampton, the company responsible for delivering Sea City, addressed the audience and afterwards said, “The launch event has been extremely successful. To have so many people attend, all joining forces to promote Southampton’s attractions and events to residents and visitors is fantastic.”

Also speaking at the event was Mike Enser, Marketing Manager of the Southampton Boat Show, Steve Hughes, local restaurateur and owner of 4 establishments in the City including Banana Wharf, who is generously sponsored the launch and Jan Webber, Fundraising and Marketing Manager for the charity, British International Sailors Society.

One of the event's main purposes was to gain involvement, ideas and specific pledges of support from companies and organisations running events and attractions in Southampton. Lizz Clarke, Managing Director of LCM PR & Marketing led a workshop, which created over 100 ideas and written pledges.

As well as this, a number of journalists were able to experience a Sea City attraction for themselves, as they were given a guided tour of the docks in an open top bus, in the ‘Do the Docks’ tour (organised in conjunction with Solent BlueLine, ABP and Transport Works).

City champions help dress the streets of Southampton

Business Southampton City Champions have been helping dress the City in Sea City 2007 banners to promote the City’s annual sea-related festival and in the process make Southampton, arguably, the best-dressed city in Britain.

Pictured are David Tipple, partner at accountancy firm Grant Thornton and David Thompson, Managing Partner at Moore Blatch Solicitors, carefully attaching their own branded, brightly coloured banners to lampposts in the City Centre whilst 10 feet up in the air on a cherry picker!

The art of raising flags and banners to decorate urban areas is known as ‘city dressing’ and with Leeds sporting 80 banners, and most cities with just 30 or 40, Southampton is way out ahead with 120. The coordinated efforts of around 50 businesses working together with Business Southampton has provided the funding, with the Daily Echo, Moore Blatch Solicitors and Grant Thornton being the main contributors.

Sea City, Southampton’s annual events festival, is in its second year and the brightly coloured banners are helping to create an exciting festival buzz.

David Tipple, who is also president of Southampton and Fareham Chamber of Commerce and finance director of Business Southampton, said: “Southampton, the financial heart of the South Coast, is a great place to live and work, and it's important that we promote that message, not only to the world outside the city, but also internally to the local community."

He continues, "That’s why Grant Thornton is proud to be supporting the Sea City campaign because it contributes to this aim. By instilling a sense of civic pride and strengthening the city's identity, we can promote the Southampton's thriving business economy and encourage more investment in the region. The campaign coincides with our recent investment in a brand new home in the heart of Southampton, bringing together our teams from across the South Coast, so we are particularly proud to celebrate Southampton and fly the Sea City flag outside our new office.”

Sally Lynskey, Chief Executive of Business Southampton, said, “I think it is fair to say Southampton is probably the best dressed City in the UK! The banners look brilliant; if you look down West Quay Road or The Avenue it is a wonderful sight to see all the bright oranges, pinks and greens which create great impact.” Sally went on to say, “The feedback from our sponsors, and residents of the City, has been very positive and more than 70,000 motorists and pedestrians are viewing the banners - and their sponsors – on a regular basis.”

Working together for a maritime celebration

A celebration of Southampton‘s role as Britain’s leading maritime city is being launched this week. Under the banner of ‘Sea City, Southampton’ many of the organisations across the city and region will pull together to put together events and exhibitions throughout 2006 recognising the relationship the city has with the sea, both in the past and in plans for the future.

“We all need to work together” says Councillor Edwina Cooke who will launch Sea City, Southampton at the Chamber of Commerce lunch at the Southampton Boat Show today.

“We’ve got a great history, and a great future.  It’s about time we got together as a city and said ‘we can do better’,” adds Councillor Cooke. “I am really proud of Southampton, of what we can offer and of our excellent maritime history. Events and activities are one great way we can share this with our community and with visitors to the city. We can only do this if we work together, share our ideas and get on and make something happen

“I am pleased to support this programme which will continue long after I am Mayor. We already have some big organisations signed up to support this – so come on Southampton lets see what we can achieve when we work together!”

Sea City Southampton has already got support from the Chamber of Commerce, Southampton City Council, University of Southampton, Associated British Ports, Southampton Boat Show and Southampton Airport., Sea City Southampton.

“It is clear that we are missing a trick in Southampton,” says Jimmy Chestnutt, Director General of Southampton and Fareham Chamber of Commerce, and also the organisation which will be co-ordinating the events calendar for 2006.  “We have often complained that local citizens can’t get access to the water - so let’s see what we can do with the water and be creative with these ideas. We need people and organisations to support this - through organising or sponsoring events, helping to promote the celebration or by helping to fund the organising office for future years. This can only work by us all working together.

“Thanks to the Southampton Partnership and the South of England Development Agency we have a seed fund to test the water to see what we can achieve – but we need to aim high if we want this to succeed and we need to get the whole city involved.

The Leader of Southampton City Council, Councillor Adrian Vinson concludes; “It is great to see the support that this initiative has already received. We want to bring together all the great ideas that we have in the city and really make a difference to the city next summer. .

“I am grateful to the Chamber of Commerce for leading this process and they can rely on our full support to bring about this exciting project for 2006.  Southampton is a great city and I am sure that Sea City Southampton will help us show the rest of the region and country what we are proud of.”

Young artist wins Sea City competition

A Bitterne Park Comprehensive School pupil has been named as 2006’s Young Artist of the Year in the Sea City Southampton’s art competition.

From scores of entries, 15 year old Abbey Corsi was named the overall winner, receiving the title of Young Artist of the Year 2006 and winning £300, with an additional £100 going to the art department of Bitterne Park Comprehensive School.

Earlier in the year, Barratt Homes Southampton joined forces with Sea City Southampton to launch the art competition, pledging a prize fund to reward the winning artists.

Sea City Southampton’s aim is to celebrate Southampton’s role as Britain’s leading maritime city and acknowledge the relationship the city has with the sea.  Many organisations across the city and region will put on sea-themed events and exhibitions throughout 2006 to recognise the importance of the water to the area.

“Barratt Homes are really proud to be involved with the Sea City programme, it’s such a great way to honour the place we live in and promote and support our local community, including the schools,” said Ian Wallace, managing director of Barratt Homes Southampton, who presented Abbey with her prize and certificate.

“By sponsoring the competition, young artists in the area were given the chance to create a piece of artwork around the theme of Southampton’s maritime heritage and to produce 2D, 3D or multi-media work.”

After the win, Abbey commented: “I’m so happy and surprised to have won, my watercolour painting took around 10 hours to complete and I was really satisfied when I finished it.  I definitely want to carry on with art and am thinking about studying it at college.”

Bitterne Park Comprehensive school headteacher, Susan Trigger said that the art competition was a great way for the pupils to learn more about their area and the history of the city.  The children researched the growth of the docks and also looked into the story of the Titanic, which sailed from Southampton, to inspire their artwork.

The school also won the Key Stage 4 school achievement category, and the art department was rewarded with £200.  Art teacher Zoë Churcher happily accepted the certificate and commented: “My students really enjoyed working on the project and I’m proud of all those who won, and am thrilled to bits for Abbey. She is a very gifted young artist and worked so hard to produce the winning piece which was painted in such intricate detail.  I’m delighted for her.”

Barratt Homes have built thousands of new homes in the Southampton area and understand the importance of great homes for families and the housebuilder’s apprentice scheme provides jobs and training for children leaving school.  For further information on any of the current 15 developments in the region, contact 023 80 273 311 or visit the website on www.barratthomes.co.uk.
